Peritoneal Cancer Prognosis

The Types Of Treatments Used To Improve A Peritoneal Cancer Prognosis And When They Are Used.

On the whole, peritoneal cancer prognosis is not good, and the average median life expectancy after the disease has been diagnosed is anything between 12 and 25 months. There are, however, extreme cases, and these range from anything from four months to, in an unprecedented case, 60 months. The three types of available treatments comprise surgery, chemotherapy and palliative/supportive treatment, and each treatment type has its own specific influence on the peritoneal cancer prognosis. Surgery will, most often, be classed as explorative surgery, and its aim will be to remove any cancerous pelvic mass that is located during the procedure and thus improve a patient's peritoneal cancer prognosis. Chemotherapy will involve the patient's ingesting certain drugs, or combinations of drugs, that have been shown to improve peritoneal cancer prognosis.

Palliative or supportive treatment, on the other hand, merely assists a patient cope with the debilitating symptoms of a disease that is too far advanced to be checked. Depending on an individual patient's peritoneal cancer prognosis, surgery is often suggested along with one of the two other treatments. Exactly which of the other two treatments will be suggested in which cases depends on what stage the disease is in, how healthy the patient is apart from the cancer and how he or she has responded to previous treatments. If a patient is in fairly good health and is known to respond well to treatment, then surgery is performed in combination with chemotherapy, and this has, in certain cases, been shown to significantly improve a patient's peritoneal cancer prognosis.

If, however, a patient is in poor health to begin with and does not respond to treatment, palliative care is provided after surgery and will continue as long as necessary even though the patient has an extremely poor peritoneal cancer prognosis. Although anyone suffering from this disease has a debilitating and fatal illness, their short-term peritoneal cancer prognosis may be improved through the correct combination of treatments.
